Happiness is a Full Tank

Having a full tank of happiness not only feels good, but research shows that it can help you live longer and have better health and relationships. It can also boost career success and improve the lives of those around you.

Genetics, life circumstances and past experiences all play a role in happiness, but there are things you can do to increase your well-being.

1. Invest in yourself

Investing in yourself is one of the easiest, cheapest, and most rewarding things you can do. Whether it’s learning new skills, organizing your home, or keeping in touch with friends, these small investments will pay off big dividends over time.

Investing in yourself can mean taking on risk, such as going back to school or starting a business. But you need to ask yourself: Is this worth it?

3. Practice gratitude

Gratitude involves appreciating what you have, rather than focusing on your lacks. It helps you refocus your thoughts away from negative emotions and unpleasant sensations, such as stress or anxiety.

Try keeping a gratitude journal where you write down three to five things that you appreciate each week. Practicing gratitude is also a great way to strengthen your connections with others.

7. Make time for self-care

Many people believe that self-care is selfish, but it’s important to remember that you can’t “pour from an empty cup.” Make time for hobbies, relaxation activities, connection with friends and family, or spiritual exploration. Be sure to keep your goals in mind, but be flexible when necessary – such as postponing a movie date or changing your jogging route due to construction.

8. Practice mindfulness

We’ve all heard people say, “Enjoy every moment. Life’s too short.” While you may have rolled your eyes at this well-intentioned advice, research shows that living in the moment is actually good for your health.

Mindfulness is a popular meditation technique that involves paying attention to your breath and your surroundings. It can be as simple as sitting comfortably, closing your eyes and focusing on your feet.

9. Learn a new skill

Learning new skills is a great way to keep your brain active and improve your overall mental health. Plus, it can help you feel more accomplished and boost your self-confidence.

Having happiness as a goal can make you miserable when things go wrong, like traffic or a bad breakup. Happiness as a skill makes more sense because you can choose to be happy at any time.

10. Try something new

Trying new things can be a great way to find happiness. Whether it’s a new hobby, food, or experience, it can be fun to add something new to your life. Try a new activity that makes you happy, and don’t worry about what other people think! It’s just for you. :)!
