Happiness is a Full Tank

For a long time, happiness was considered an afterthought in psychology. Most of the field’s focus was on pathology and all that can go wrong in life.

Research shows that people with a full tank of happiness trust more easily, have more monogamous relationships and are more caring. Unlike the car, these are traits you can work on to make a big difference in your life.

1. Take care of yourself

Adulthood can sometimes feel like a never-ending race to meet targets, keep up with responsibilities and just get through each day. But it’s important to remember that your mental health is just as important as anything else. So, check in with yourself from time to time and consider what needs to be done versus what can wait. Set boundaries, learn to say “no” and remind yourself daily of things that you are grateful for.

These activities are not selfish but essential for your own happiness and wellbeing. They also allow you to be the best version of yourself for those around you. If you are tired or worn down it’s difficult to spread joy and positivity to others. It’s also a good idea to spend some time with positive people. They could be family members, friends or even peer counselors at local mental health drop-in centers. These people can help you navigate tough times and offer emotional support.

2. Spend time with friends and family

Research has shown that spending time with friends and family can boost happiness. Whether it’s the weak-tie connections (your acquaintance with whom you chat in line at the grocery store, the pet store employee who remembers your cat) or the stronger ties (close friends you consider family), these social interactions are surprisingly sustaining. In fact, a recent study showed that the strength of a person’s social circle better predicted their stress, well-being and happiness levels than their physical health data collected from a fitness tracker.

When you spend quality time with loved ones, they can be a support system when life gets tough. This emotional support can help reduce stress, improve psychological wellness and increase self-esteem. Plus, having the people you love around can remind you how special and important you are.

4. Do things that make you happy

The things that make you happy will be different for everyone, but there are some common things that many people find happiness in. Activities such as exercise, being surrounded by nature, or helping others can all help you feel happier.

Doing the things that make you happy also helps increase your productivity. When you love what you do, it is easier to keep working and pushing through when the task gets difficult.

Life is too short to spend it doing things that don’t make you happy. If you aren’t happy in your current situation, don’t be afraid to try something new! You deserve to be happy, and it is worth every effort. Remember that “YOLO” is more than just a saying; it’s a lifestyle ethos.
