Researchers measure happiness in many ways. One way is by asking people to self-report their level of happiness.
Other approaches use biological or behavioral indicators. For example, scientists test saliva or take saliva samples to look for certain neurotransmitters and hormones.
Happiness goes beyond a fleeting feeling or emotion. It’s a life evaluation, a reflective assessment of a person’s overall satisfaction in their lives.
1. Look for the Good
When you look for the good, your life can take on a different vibe. Even when you are confronted with challenges, try to find the silver lining and see if there is something positive that will come out of it. This doesn’t mean ignore the bad, as dishonesty, rudeness and evil exist but when you approach difficult situations with a positive mindset, it will make your life much more enjoyable.
Likewise, if you are around others, try to see the good in them, not their faults or weaknesses. This will brighten their paths and yours. Even if it is as simple as making them smile or buying them a coffee, this can start a cycle of positivity.
Remember, the good that you see in others is also true of yourself, but it might be a bit harder to see. You have real talents, good intentions and virtues of mind and heart. Give yourself credit for those and start to appreciate them.
2. Don’t Neglect the Small Things
Whether through stress, health issues, caring for aging parents or just a busy life, we can burn through our tank and find ourselves operating on fumes. Taking the time to enjoy the little things is one way to refill your fuel tank and to help you to see that these small everyday pleasures are the ones that often make life enjoyable.
For example, notice when you add milk to your coffee, it is a simple thing but when you take the time to notice and appreciate how the process feels, it can be quite magical. Similarly, notice the simple joy that comes from walking in nature, taking a leisurely meal or enjoying a cup of tea.
Another small daily pleasure that can be easy to overlook is the calm that meditation provides. Learning how to meditate regularly teaches you to drive through each day with a full tank by lowering your stress levels and allowing yourself to be in control of what is happening around you.
3. Be Consistent
Consistency is the quiet engine that propels you towards your long-term goals. It takes time to develop and maintain, but it is the key to success. If you are consistent, you’re committed to sticking with your goal until you reach it.
Consistent action helps you create a solid habit and builds your skill level. It also enhances your productivity and efficiency. You won’t waste time deciding what to do next and you will be able to complete tasks more quickly.
Being consistent also gives you confidence. Seeing your progress over time is encouraging, and it will make you feel empowered to face new challenges and explore uncharted territories. It’s important to define your goals, create a plan, learn from failures, seek support, practice self-discipline, celebrate successes, be patient, and align your motivation so it is sustainable over the long term. It is through consistency that you will build positive habits and reach your full potential.
4. Take Care of Yourself
We’re often so busy with work, family, and other obligations that happiness can feel out of reach. But there are some habits that can help us get closer to it.
For example, exercise not only helps keep your body healthy, but it also releases feel-good chemicals and boosts your mood. Similarly, volunteering and other acts of altruism have been shown to make people happier.
Finally, finding a hobby that suits you can help bring happiness into your life by adding meaning. And practicing the hobby regularly allows you to reap its benefits over time.
Try keeping a journal and writing down happy memories or things you are looking forward to each month. Then, when you have some downtime (waiting for an appointment, for example) or a bad day, pull out the list and let it lift your spirits. You can even take it with you to read on the go!
